Pocket aces is the best pre-flop starting hand but sometimes you need to fold this hand after the flop. A common error many beginning players make is getting married to a big pre-flop hand. Sometimes it is correct to fold on AA on the flop, turn, or river. A common situation occurs when you raise pre-flop with AA and have a couple callers. Usually you should bet about three quarters of the pot size and proceed according to your opponent. If your opponent raises you all-in on the flop, you may want to think about folding your hand. When an opponent re-raises all in on the flop, he is representing three of a kind or a set. It is very likely that your opponent called with a small pocket pair and hit the flop. It takes a lot of self-discipline to fold pocket aces but it needs to be done. Through experience, folding pocket aces will become automatic.
Another time you may want to consider folding occurs when your opponent hits a possible flush or straight. Say you make a continuation bet on the flop with two hearts on the board. On the turn, another heart falls to make a possible flush. If your opponent bets out a large amount, you may need to fold your pocket aces. Remember that poker is a game of people more than a game of cards. It doesn't really matter if you have pocket aces when your opponent has a flush. In order to win, you have to fold your hand when you are obviously dominated. It may take some experience at the tables to get used to folding big premium hands post-flop. After playing thousands of hands, you will learn to recognize when you are beat. Good players know how to win with AA, great players know how to lose the least amount with AA. Learn how to play each type of hand and you will be well on your way to winning a poker tournament.
